H.E. James Wani Igga

Prof. James Wani Igga is a renowned academic and statesman with a wealth spanning more than 25 years of expertise in the economics. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy, Majoring in Business Administration, Specialising in Taxation Policy for Business Investment from Bulacan State University in the Republic of Philippines in 2017. A Masters in Transformational Leadership and Change from the University of Greenwich, London in 2013, and a Bachelor’s in economics in 1979, from Cairo University, Egypt.
Igga was one of the first South Sudanese to receive a scholarship to attend several public and private universities in Egypt. He studied economics at Cairo University and was a founding member of the Juwama Africa Patriotic Organisation (JAPO), rising to the position of its chairman. Upon completion of studies, Prof. Wani started his career at various economic institutions working in the government ministry of finance developing his career in insurance and financial systems.
The thesis was given to the faculty of Bulacan State University’s graduate school in the Philippines. His dissertation’s working title “Improving the Taxation Policy for Business Investors, Both Local and Foreign: The Case of South Sudan.”
Igga conducted a four-year in-depth investigation into the underlying causes of this unfavourable reality and how it could be changed after realising that South Sudan’s tax contribution to the country’s GDP (Tax to GDP ratio) is the lowest in the region, as well as Africa and the world.
The issues and solutions identified in this study significantly enhance taxation practises and policy, as well as foster sustainable economic growth.
The public, corporate community and decision-makers in general are all given access to the published dissertation book, which is available in the Africa Zeal University library.
Since 2017, he began serving in University of Juba, Mr. Wani served as a lecturer in Public Finance at University of Juba’s Department of Finance & Business Administration.
Prof. James is the Vice President and doubles as a chairman of the Economic Cluster, Republic of South Sudan. Or in charge of economic development, planning and finances. He participates in various national and international economic policy talks, chairs the board of the Economic Cluster, and proposes new policies.
Prof. James held the position of Vice President from 2013 to date, previously serving as Right Honourable Speaker of South Sudan’s Legislative Assembly from 2005 to 2013.
Since 2005, Prof. James has played a vital role in the management, stabilisation, reconstruction, and restructuring of the economy. His commitment for economic justice and the emancipation of the people on the economic front has never wavered.
He has published a number of articles and books recently, including “Advancing Economy: A Personal Account” and “African Perspectives on Sovereign Debt Restructuring,” demonstrating his continued interest in academia.
Prof. Dr. James Wani Igga released his tenth book, “Global Comparative Taxation with South Sudan as the Epicentre,” on January 26, 2022.
The book is a comparative analysis that combines South Sudan and the rest of the world in order to compel her to make decisions that are in line with the current economic climate. It also aims to promote fundamental taxation concepts and serve as a wake-up call to taxpayers in order to raise public awareness of their rights and obligations and educate managers about public finance management.
“This book will benefit the economic cluster, domestic tax department, customs, revenue authority, students, researchers and revenue generating institutions,” he delightedly said. He continued that the book will give policy makers insights to gauge out tax defaulters. It went on to discuss effective tax policies that foster responsive accountability and serve as a driver for growth.
He possesses a high level of integrity, excellent PR skills, and a demonstrated capacity to sell and expand the University internationally.
